Hello old friend,
It’s been ages since you were last truly part of my life. People still ask me about you, and I never know what to say. I tell them “Yeah, that was a long time ago.”
To be honest, I know the best way to start is with an apology. I asked you to take time apart so that I could focus on other things, but I never expected it to take this long. And, the way my life is set up, I still can’t promise to make you a priority. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to. For this and for the silence, I’m sorry.
A lot has happened; a lot of dreams you dreamt have come true. Remember that chick I was dating, the one you recorded an album for? Yeah, we’re married now. Good thing that worked out, otherwise it would’ve been awkward. I never told you this, but dedicating an album to a girlfriend is a wild concept!
Anyway, we’re still going strong, eight years on, and we’re parents now! One toddler and one on the way. I’m a husband and a dad now. This was your dream, and it’s the most wonderful experience of my life. So I know you’ll understand if things never go back to how they used to be. You wouldn’t want them to. I’ll tell you more about the family in future letters.
Remember the job I told you I got hired for? I did pretty well at it and I even changed jobs a few times. I’ve met a lot of people I wouldn’t have met otherwise, and learned many lessons. There’s still much to do and learn, though. This part of my life takes up most of my days, but I’m grateful for what it allows me to do for my loved ones.
Anyway, before I go on about my life, I know you’re wondering why I’m writing to you — why now.
Because I realize I’ve made a mistake. See, I tried creating a space to accommodate you and the other parts of me, but that hasn’t worked out how I thought it would. I find you and the others fighting over whose space this is, and, to be honest, it’s been paralyzing. Turns out, juggling different facets of a life is much easier to do within one’s mind than online.
I also know you deserve your own space. So that’s what I want to do now. I’m changing a few things here:
This small corner of the internet is yours to do with as you please. Write whatever you want: poems, stories, essays, and so on.
The name’s gotta change, though. I’m thinking of calling it ‘Rhyme & Reflection’. That sounds more like you.
And don’t worry about the others; I’m already building spaces for them. All I ask is that you write consistently because I need you, and I miss you.
I can’t wait to read what you write next.
Love,
Ivan
